The government has released a new report outlining its predictions for the security of the UK's energy supplies.
Published by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, the Energy Markets Outlook report has been created to help politicians discover how they can ensure that the UK has enough electricity supplies in 15 years' time.
Discussing the report, energy minister Malcolm Wicks said whatever the future holds for energy in the UK, the government should embrace a "far greater role" for renewable energy.
He added: "The sooner the world tackles climate change the better, both economically and environmentally.
"The best way of reducing emissions from energy is to use less. But whatever the exact composition of the future energy mix is, it must clearly involve a far greater role for renewable energy."
Mr Wicks' call for an increase in the use of renewable energy sources has come after the government announced it is to invest a further £170 million in the research of new low-carbon technologies through the Environmental Transformation Fund.
